Badminton sport is quite possibly the most popular sport in Indonesia. Badminton evolved in ancient Egyptian times (around 200 years ago), but some believe it comes from China and India. Badminton is played by either two people for a singles game or two pairs of people for the doubles game. In badminton, the shuttlecock must be hit from one side of the net to the other and fall within the boundary so the opponent can hit it back across the net.
In Indonesia, badminton was first established in Jakarta on January 27, 1947 under the name, Persatuan Olahraga Republik Indonesia (PORI), and then on May 5, 1951 the name changed to PBSI (Persatuan Bulutangkis Seluruh Indonesia) (Indonesian Badminton Association). Indonesia has won many badminton awards, including the World Championship, Thomas and Uber Cup, and the All-England Championships, as well as major sporting events, like the SEA Games, Asian Games and even the Olympics. Rudi Hartono won the All England Cup 8 times in a row, as well as the Thomas Cup and the World Cup in 1980. In the 2008 summer Olympics, Indonesians received a gold medal for the men’s doubles, a silver medal for the mixed doubles, and a bronze for the women’s singles.
Indonesia provides badminton facilities for children who show promise. Djarum Cigarettes Factory is one of the companies that gives scholarships to children who excel in the field of badminton. Djarum Badminton Association collaborates with the Ministry of Education and Culture (MOEC). This collaboration allows students to have a different schedule from their peers so they can train as well. They are also allowed to miss school to go to tournaments.
A prospective athlete is placed at a Jati Sports Building. This building is a training center for several of the Djarum Badminton Association athletes training for singles. Meanwhile, athletes training for doubles badminton are trained at a different place in Jakarta. These two buildings are two of the best badminton training facilities in Asia. Djarum Badminton Association collaborates with Indonesian students of all ages to support the academic performance of athletes
This scholarship program has produced many talented young athletes, including Liem Swie King, Alan Budi Kusuma, Ardy B. Wiranata, and Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana, who just won the All England Championship in 2014.
