Looking for affordable adventure sports insurance for scuba hyperbaric chambers and that offers emergency treatment and evacuation including payment for hyperbaric recompression chambers and decompression sickness/decompression syndrome (known as the bends or DCI/DCS)? Check out our GU Diplomat Series of hazardous sports insurance.
Global Underwriters DIPLOMAT ADVENTURE sports plan, or if traveling to the USA to scuba dive – Diplomat America (offering the same protections and coverages, but for non-U.S. residents/citizens for scuba diving in America)
One nice feature of Diplomat is if you are not intending to visit the U.S.A., you can save money by selecting Diplomat International whether you are a U.S. citizen traveling to dive in Barbados, or if you are an Australian scuba diving in Indonesia. Either way your coverage includes Arterial Gas Embolism (AGE) or Decompression Illness (DCI).
Note that with either Diplomat International and Diplomat America, both require scuba divers to be certified (SCUBA certification) in order to be covered under this policy and choose the additional hazardous sports rider.
Diplomat travel protection includes the following “to and from” your dive site: Travel medical evacuation, political evacuation, natural disasters, emergency reunion, interruption of trip, return of mortal remains, emergency dental treatment, sudden reoccurrence of a pre-existing condition, and pre-existing conditions will be covered under this plan as regular medical claims as long as the condition has not reoccurred in the last 12 months.
This plan also offer a Home Country Coverage Rider– Which provides limited coverage while in your home country. The plan pays 80% up to $5,000 of Covered Expenses, then 100% to a maximum of 1) $50,000 for Incidental Trip(s) to your Home Country or 2) $10,000 for Extension of Benefits (“Follow Me Home” Coverage).
The lost baggage protection on this policy is only $50 per item up to $250. Not very “strong” for diving equipment/cameras, so please check your homeowners policy prior to purchase/travel, or double up with membership in DAN below (Their maximum lost scuba gear benefit is up to $2,500 that results from an accident, see next).
Another option we recommend is becoming a member of Divers Alert Network (DAN), which also has dive accident insurance options for members, depending on which state you live in. Many scuba divers we know “double up” on insurance to cover differing aspects of their travel/diving insurance protection and benefits. The reason for this is DAN member benefits for “Medical Non-Dive Accident Coverage (occurring outside home country)” is only $20,000 Per Occurrence, or $10,000 Lifetime Maximum, or “not included” at all, depending on which option you choose. But together with a Diplomat plan you will have the best, most affordable protection available!
